More than 7,500 volunteers embarked on a three-day mission to count our homeless neighbors in Los Angeles.
From January 24 to 26, Hilton Foundation staff members joined thousands of volunteers across Los Angeles County at this year’s Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count. Our staff participated as drivers, navigators and counters alongside our partners in our Ending Chronic Homelessness strategic initiative. Many shared their Count experience on social media using the hashtag #TheyCountWillYou.
Led by the Los Angeles Homelessness Services Authority (LAHSA), the point-in-time count provides a snapshot of the state of homelessness in Los Angeles; brings vital community resources; and increases engagement bringing together leaders, residents and stakeholders. The data from the Count will allow our partners to target resources to those most in need and raise awareness of the homelessness epidemic impacting more than 47,000 people across Los Angeles County.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti kicked off the 2017 Greater Los Angeles Count and explained that the count is about more than just the statistics to the Los Angeles community.
“We need an accurate tally, but the homeless count isn’t about statistics — it’s about lifting up men, women, and children who are the face of a human crisis. Their stories demand our attention, and their circumstances compel us to action.” — Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti
