Conrad N. Hilton Foundation Awards $26 Million in Grants in the Third Quarter of 2017

(Los Angeles) September 25, 2017– The board of directors of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation announced today that it approved 14 grants totaling $26 million during the third quarter of 2017. Among the funds approved was a grant for $8.5 million over three years to support the Home For Good initiative at the United Way of Greater Los Angeles to end chronic and veteran homelessness in Los Angeles County. Of the total grant amount, $2.7 million will support Home For Good implementation and $5.8 million will provide leveraged grants through the Home For Good Funders Collaborative.

In its seventh year, our partners in government, nonprofit and philanthropy continue to work collaboratively to drive long-term solutions to end homelessness in Los Angeles county,” said Peter Laugharn, president and CEO of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. “The Foundation’s investment alone is not enough to bring solutions to scale, and public-private partnerships such as Home For Good allow the Foundation’s investment in our communities to be amplified.”

Following is an overview of all grants awarded in the third quarter of 2017:

Homelessness – In addition to the abovementioned $8.5 million grant to United Way of Greater Los Angeles, New Venture Fund will receive $1.2 million to support Funders for Housing and Opportunity, a cross-sector, non-partisan, national collaborative committed to bettering life outcomes for rent burdened households and individuals experiencing homelessness through permanent housing.

Substance Use PreventionSeattle Children’s Hospital was awarded $900,000 to conduct additional research regarding the usability and effectiveness of a web-based screening application to implement Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT).

Foster YouthFund for Public Health in New York, Inc. was granted $750,000 to support the Adolescence Health Unit in increasing access to pregnancy prevention services for foster youth in New York City public high schools and agencies working with foster youth.

HospitalityUniversity of Houston Foundation was granted $2.4 million to the Conrad N. Hilton School of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston to support the implementation of recommendations from the strategic audit. Liberty’s Kitchen will also receive $1.2 million to fund strategic planning, provide core support and increase organizational capacity. Administrators of Tulane Educational Fund was awarded $750,000 to support the expansion of the Cowen Institute’s Earn and Learn program, an apprenticeship type job-training and education program, into hospitality pathways at the Hilton Riverside.

Young Children Affected by HIV and AIDSEpiscopal Relief and Development will receive $1.4 million to support and document an integrated early childhood development program in Zambia and Kenya through faith-based partners. Project Concern International was granted $1.6 million to implement and test the integration of responsive care and nutrition support to caregivers in Tanzania. Finally, jointly funded with the Foundation’s Catholic Sisters Strategic Initiative, [Catholic Relief Services]https://www.crs.org/) will receive $4.1 million for the second phase of Strengthening the Capacity of Women Religious in Early Childhood Development in Zambia, Kenya and Malawi.

Catholic Sisters – In addition to the abovementioned co-funded grant to Catholic Relief Services, the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose was granted $1 million to expand the reach of the Sisters Leadership Development Initiative-América Latina to Guadalajara and Mexico City while continuing to support alumnae in Tijuana. In addition, the School Sisters of Notre Dame will receive $1.5 million to implement the strategic plan for the Religious at the United Nations.

Catholic EducationCristo Rey Network was awarded $750,000 to advance the mission of the Cristo Rey Network by expanding the program in three low-income locales and conducting feasibility studies in 13 states to determine the possibility of expansion.
