James McClelland

James McClelland serves as the senior officer of strategy and programs. He works closely with the vice president of strategy and programs, as well as with the whole Program Department staff, in integrating the department’s work across the Foundation. McClelland also works with the board and with grantees to deepen the impact of the Foundation’s strategic grantmaking efforts. Prior to joining the Foundation, McClelland was a program officer at the Angell Foundation, where he helped form and manage the Transformational Leadership funding area. Previously, he was a senior philanthropic advisor at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors in New York City, helping individual donors and foundations achieve their philanthropic goals. He began his philanthropic career over 15 years ago at the Nathan Cummings Foundation. McClelland holds a master’s degree in diplomatic studies from the University of Westminster, U.K., and a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, San Diego.
