Comprehensive Education Toolkit for Youth Who Are Systems Involved

Youth in foster care and probation systems need education in the least restrictive environment with the right supports to thrive. School, where they spend most of their time, offers unique opportunities to build skills for their well-being and resilience. Unfortunately, youth in foster care often face low educational outcomes due to various factors. To improve this, we must prioritize their educational needs and ensure coordination between education, foster care, and probation systems.

Our partners at Alliance for Children’s Rights created an updated and comprehensive resource designed to help adults and youth work together to meet these educational needs. It integrates all prior toolkits, including the Foster Youth Education Toolkit, Court Companion, and Best Practices Guide—all in one place. This new version includes:

  • Current legal guidance and best practices
  • Updated content on school discipline, complaint procedures, and probation-involved youth
  • Interactive features with direct links to best practices, tools, and resources
  • Resources for all audiences, including school districts, child welfare, probation, and court personnel
  • Youth-created videos offering firsthand perspectives on challenges and solutions
