In his last will, Conrad N. Hilton charged the Foundation to “support the Catholic sisters, who devote their love and life’s work for the good of mankind.” Catholic sisters are at the heart of human development efforts and share a commitment to serve people from all walks of life and religious beliefs.
Recently, Pope Francis acknowledged that Catholic sisters have experienced sexual abuse at the hands of some priests and bishops within the Catholic Church. While we commend the pope for acknowledging this, we are deeply saddened by it.
We believe that there is no place for abuse of any kind in society, particularly within the sacred institutions that exist to protect us. We stand with Catholic sisters and all survivors of sexual abuse and assault and we join the call for community and religious leaders to respond with greater transparency and accountability.
