Amref Health Africa, formerly AMREF (Africa Medical and Research Foundation), is a multifaceted healthcare organization working on the most critical health issues facing Africa: HIV/AIDS, malaria, clean water and sanitation, surgical outreach, training of health professionals, and family health.

Building the capacity of African healthcare

Amref Health Africa’s strategies emphasize advocacy, capacity building, and research. The organization has led efforts to rebuild healthcare systems decimated by war and created new ones where none existed before.

It has trained hundreds of thousands of health personnel—from doctors and nurses to medical officers and traditional birth attendants—in more than 20 countries, leading to improved health for millions of people.

With a staff that is 97 percent African, Amref Health Africa is committed to the premise that only Africans can lead Africa into the 21st century.
