Water Access in Ethiopia

Millennium Water Program

In 2007, the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation awarded $7 million to the Millennium Water Program to directly benefit 360,000 villagers in Ethiopia over the next four years. This program works to provide clean water, promote sanitation, facilitate hygiene education, and build local government capacity.

World Vision

A $5.2 million Hilton Foundation grant is helping World Vision to carry out supplemental water and sanitation programming in Ethiopia. Over the grant's five years, 340,000 rural Ethiopians will be provided with safe water and 170,000 people will gain access to improved sanitation.

Results

To date, over 600 safe water supply schemes have been completed and more than 500,000 people have gained access to an improved water source through activities funded by the Hilton Foundation.

About 4,000 community members have been trained in operation and management of the completed schemes. More than 40,000 households have constructed latrines, providing 200,000 people with access to improved sanitation.

To date, 86 ventilated pit latrines have been constructed at schools, health centers, and in public gathering places—providing important accommodations for 153,200 school children and community members. In addition, close to 400,000 people have received hygiene education.
