William G. Ouchi, Ph.D.

William G. Ouchi is a distinguished professor of management at the UCLA Anderson School of Management in Los Angeles, where he holds the Sanford and Betty Sigoloff endowed chair. At UCLA, he chairs the Riordan Programs, which have served inner-city Los Angeles high school and college students since 1987.
Ouchi has co-authored five books and several articles, most of which pertain to the structure of very large business and government organizations. His current research centers on discovering new ways to organize large, urban public school systems to improve student achievement.
In the business sector, Ouchi serves on the boards of directors of AECOM and Sempra Energy. He also serves on the U.S. advisory board of Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ. He also serves on the boards of the California Heart Center Foundation and the Los Angeles Alliance for College-Ready Public Schools, which operates charter schools in the Watts, southern, and eastern areas of Los Angeles. He served as chief of staff to Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan and as co-trustee of the Mayor Tom Bradley Blind Trust.
Ouchi was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii where he graduated from the Punahou School in 1961. He received his B.A. at Williams College, his M.B.A. at Stanford University, and his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago. He has received honorary doctorates from Williams College and from The Ohio State University.
